Upper Kachura Lake sits above Skardu in the Kachura Valley, a short drive followed by a short walk from the main road. It’s one of two lakes that make up the Kachura system, the other being Lower Kachura, better known as Shangrila. Where Shangrila has a full resort built around it, Upper Kachura is the quieter of the two: less developed, fewer people, and a walk you have to earn to get there. This day trip covers the drive from Skardu, the visit itself, and the return, with private transport arranged from your hotel or a pickup point in the city.
It suits most travelers. There’s no technical trekking involved, just a paced uphill walk on a rocky path, so it works for families with older kids, couples looking for a quieter stop than the resort lakes, and photographers who want the early morning light without a crowd in the frame.

What to Expect on the Upper Kachura Lake Day Trip
The drive out of Skardu follows the road toward Kachura village, running alongside orchards and small settlements before the terrain opens up into the valley. Once you’re dropped near Kachura, the vehicle part of the trip is over. Getting to the lake itself means a walk, usually estimated at somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes depending on which route your driver or guide takes and how quickly your group moves. It’s uphill, on a mix of stone steps and dirt trail, but it’s not technical. Most people manage it in ordinary trainers.
What you find at the top is a smaller, calmer body of water than Shangrila. The color shifts through the day, from a deep blue in the morning to a greener tone by afternoon, and the surrounding slopes are steep enough that the lake stays in shadow for part of the day, which keeps the water genuinely cold. Locals sometimes use the far bank for washing or fishing, and the whole place feels more like a working part of the valley than a staged tourist stop. That’s part of the appeal for people who’ve already done the more crowded lakes nearby.
Rowboats are usually available at the shore during the main season, run by local operators rather than the tour company, so boating is something you pay for on the spot if you want it. The same goes for trout fishing, which is possible in the lake but needs a permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan Fisheries Department. If fishing is something you want to do, mention it when you book so we can help you sort out the permit locally rather than trying to arrange it on the day.
Itinerary
The exact timing depends on your pickup location, group size, and the season, but a typical day runs like this.
Morning departure. Pickup from your Skardu hotel, usually mid-to-late morning since there’s no need to beat traffic on this route. The drive to Kachura takes most groups 35 to 45 minutes.
Arrival and the walk up. Your driver parks near Kachura village or the Shangrila side, and from there it’s on foot. Expect a steady uphill walk of somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes. This is the part of the day that actually takes the physical effort, so pace it comfortably and take breaks if you need them.
Time at the lake. Once you’re at the shore, the schedule is loose. Most groups spend one to two hours here: walking the immediate shoreline, taking photos, boating if it’s available and you want it, or just sitting with the view. If your booking includes a combined visit to Lower Kachura, the connecting trail takes you down from Upper Kachura toward the Shangrila side.
Return to Skardu. Back down to the vehicle and the drive back to your hotel, usually arriving by mid-afternoon or early evening depending on how long you spent at the lake.

Best Time to Visit
May through October is the season this trip works best in. July and August bring the warmest weather and the most other visitors on the trail, so if you’d rather have the place closer to yourself, May, June, September, and October are worth considering, with cooler mornings and thinner crowds. Outside this window, the lake commonly freezes and the trail can ice over, which makes the walk risky rather than scenic. If you’re set on visiting in winter for the frozen lake specifically, talk to us first so we can tell you honestly whether current conditions make it worth attempting.
| Season | Months | General conditions |
| Spring | April to June | Mild, meltwater keeps the valley green, fewer crowds early in the season |
| Summer | July to August | Warmest weather, peak season, busiest trail and parking area |
| Autumn | September to October | Cooler mornings, good light for photography, generally quieter |
| Winter | November to March | Cold, lake often frozen, trail conditions can be unsafe; not recommended for a standard day trip |
Cost, Inclusions, and Exclusions

Getting There
Reaching Upper Kachura Lake starts with reaching Skardu itself. Most travelers fly in from Islamabad, weather permitting, since flights can be delayed or cancelled in poor conditions, especially in shoulder season. The alternative is the Karakoram Highway by road, which is a long, scenic route typically split over two days rather than driven straight through.
Once you’re in Skardu, this tour handles the rest: private pickup, the drive to Kachura, and the return. If you’re arranging your own transport instead of booking the full tour, renting a car in Skardu is an option, though most visitors find a driver who knows the current road and trail conditions worth the convenience.
Difficulty and Fitness Requirements
This is an easy trip by Skardu standards, but it isn’t a zero-effort one. The uphill walk from the parking area to the lake is the main physical demand, on uneven stone and dirt terrain rather than a paved path. Basic fitness is enough for most adults and older children. If anyone in your group has knee or mobility issues, mention it when booking, since the pace can be adjusted but the walk itself can’t really be shortened.
At around 2,500 metres, altitude isn’t a serious concern for most people the way it is on higher routes like Deosai. Still, if you’ve just arrived in Skardu from sea level, it’s normal to feel a little more out of breath on the walk than you would at home. Taking it slowly is enough for the vast majority of visitors.
What to Bring
- Comfortable walking shoes with decent grip, not sandals
- A warm layer, even in summer, since weather at altitude changes quickly
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Drinking water for the walk up and back
- Cash, since there’s no ATM near the lake and you’ll want it for boating or anything you buy locally
- A camera or phone with enough storage; this is a spot people tend to photograph more than expected
Important Travel Information
Weather in Skardu and the surrounding valleys can shift quickly, so treat any forecast as a guide rather than a guarantee, and be ready to adjust plans if your driver or guide advises it. Road and trail conditions to Kachura are generally reliable in season but can vary after heavy rain or early/late-season snow, so it’s worth confirming conditions in the days before you travel rather than assuming the route is always the same. If fishing interests you, a permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan Fisheries Department is required; let us know in advance and we can point you to the right local contact. As with any natural site in Gilgit-Baltistan, please pack out your own rubbish and avoid disturbing the areas locals use for fishing or washing.
Booking Information
Advance booking is a good idea, particularly in July and August when this trip and others around Skardu get busiest. To get a firm price and itinerary, send us your preferred travel date, number of travelers, departure location, and any specific requests (a combined visit to Lower Kachura, fishing arrangements, or a slower pace for the walk). We’ll confirm the package and current price from there.
