If you’ve spent any time on Pakistan travel pages recently, you’ve probably seen the photo: someone standing at the tip of a narrow rock ledge with the Skardu Valley dropping away behind them. That’s Marsur Rock, and this one-day tour takes you from Skardu City to the trailhead in Hussainabad village, then up the hike itself.
It’s worth saying upfront that this isn’t a leisurely walk. It’s a steep, mostly shadeless climb that gains a lot of altitude in a short distance, and search results for “Marsur Rock Skardu” are full of conflicting numbers about exactly how much. We’ll get into why below, and what that means for planning your day.
Marsur Rock Skardu Tour Overview
Marsur Rock sits above Hussainabad village, a short drive from Skardu City on the road toward Khaplu. You’ll also see it written as Mansur Rock, Masroor Rock, or Masrur Rock, and sometimes called the Hussainabad Slab. It’s the same place. The name confusion is common enough that it’s worth mentioning here so you don’t think you’re booking three different tours.
The rock itself is a narrow stone ledge that juts out from the mountainside, wide at the base and tapering to a point, similar in shape to Norway’s Trolltunga (which is exactly why it gets compared to it so often online). It was largely unknown outside the local area until around 2017, when photos of it started circulating and hikers began seeking it out.
Getting there involves a drive from Skardu to Hussainabad, followed by a hike that starts through the village’s green pastures and past a stream crossing, then climbs steadily up open, mostly bare mountainside. There’s genuinely no shade on the trail, and you’ll spend most of the hike above 3,000 meters, so this is not a tour to underestimate just because the total distance sounds short on paper.
One thing our guides consistently point out to first-time visitors: the trail forks partway up, and the correct path to the rock is the steeper of the two options. Without a guide or a downloaded offline map, it’s easy to end up on the wrong branch. This is the single biggest reason we recommend going with a local guide rather than attempting it solo, even if you’re an experienced hiker

Detailed Itinerary
Morning:
Depart Skardu City by private vehicle and drive to the Hussainabad hiking starting point. Depending on road conditions, this drive can take anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes, sources vary on the exact distance, so we’d rather tell you it’s a short but sometimes rough drive than quote you a number that doesn’t hold up.
Late morning:
Begin the hike from the village, crossing through farmland and a stream before the trail turns uphill. This is the easiest section and a good stretch to pace yourself and hydrate before the climb gets steeper.
Midday to early afternoon:
Continue up the steeper, rockier section of the trail toward Marsur Rock. Expect this part to take longer than the first stretch, plan for a few hours of steady climbing with rest breaks, since the terrain and thin air at altitude slow most people down more than they expect.
Afternoon:
Time at Marsur Rock for photography, sightseeing, and a rest before heading back down. Standing at the edge is optional, and if you’re not comfortable with heights, the views from a few meters back are still worth the climb.
Later afternoon:
Hike back down to the vehicle and return to Skardu City. The descent on loose, steep ground can take nearly as long as the climb up, so budget your day accordingly rather than assuming the way down is quick.

Best Time to Visit
May through October is generally the most reliable window. Spring brings cooler hiking temperatures and, in some years, blossoms in the village orchards along the lower trail. Summer is the most popular season and the most predictable for weather, though the exposed trail gets hot with no shade cover. By October, conditions start turning colder at altitude, and access can become less reliable heading into winter. Always check current road and weather conditions with us before your travel dates, mountain weather in Gilgit-Baltistan changes quickly and without much warning.
Cost, Inclusions, and Exclusions
Pricing depends on group size, vehicle type, and whether you want a private guide or a shared group tour, so we don’t publish a flat number here. Contact us directly for current rates.
Getting There
The tour departs from and returns to Skardu City. If you’re arriving from outside Gilgit-Baltistan, you’ll first need to reach Skardu by air or road, and we can help arrange that separately if needed. Once you’re in Skardu, we handle transport to and from the Hussainabad trailhead as part of the tour.
Difficulty and Fitness Requirements
This is rated moderate, leaning toward strenuous for anyone not used to hiking at altitude. You should be comfortable walking uphill on uneven, rocky ground for an extended period, and reasonably confident with your footing on loose surfaces during the descent. Altitude affects people differently regardless of general fitness level, so if you’ve just arrived in Skardu, it’s worth giving yourself a day to acclimatize before attempting this hike. This isn’t medical advice, just practical experience from guiding this trail regularly.
What to Bring
- Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, not sandals or casual sneakers
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (there’s no shade at all on the exposed sections)
- At least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person
- A light jacket, since it can be cooler and windier at the top than it is in the village
- Basic personal medication, in case of altitude discomfort
- A camera or phone with a full charge, this is one hike where you’ll want it
Important Travel Information
Weather in the mountains can shift quickly, and the trail becomes noticeably harder and more slippery after rain. Stick to marked paths and your guide’s instructions, and avoid climbing further out onto the rock ledge than feels safe just to get a photo. Confirm current trail conditions and any local access requirements with us before your visit, since these details can change season to season.
Booking Information
We recommend booking in advance, particularly during the summer peak season when demand for guides and vehicles is highest. Contact our team for current pricing, available dates, and to arrange a customized itinerary if you’d like to combine this hike with other Skardu sightseeing.
